No. 37  2012: L'Hotel a New York? È Nuovo di Zecca

Grazia (Italy)

Ogni anno, nuove architetture e restauri sperimentali di edifici troppo a lungo dimenticati fioriscono in ogni quartiere...Tutti belli e confortevoli.

Night Fever takes you on a whirlwind, round-the-world tour of the very best in hospitality design...The selected venues, all opened in the past three years, were created by young, world-renowned studios and design firms...Grzywinski+Pons created a boutique hotel with a strong connection to the neighborhood...the material palette for the entire project, inside and out, was chosen to be elemental rather than a surface treatment...finishes that share the characteristics of warmth, texture and authenticity.

We love The Nolitan, a new architecture-and-design savvy hotel in the neighborhood. Designed by DB cover boy Matthew Grzywinski and partner Amador Pons, the exterior of the hotel is wrapped in a jigsaw puzzle-like façade, while the interior is decked out in a mix of laid back, yet luxurious furnishings. Don’t forget to scope out the 2,400-square foot rooftop; it’ll make you glad you skipped the hubbub of Midtown for life in the ’hood.

New entry nel pianeta Nolita, acronimo di North of Little Italy, quartiere giovane ed effervescente a downtown Manhattan.

Matthew Grzywinski and Amador Pons joined forces to design Hotel on Rivington, an unapologetic 27-story glass tower on Manhattan’s Lower East Side...and though it’s unusual for such a junior team to win such a prized project, their naiveté and nerve produced something with sass. Confident in their combined abilities and willing to give every possible ounce of their combined effort, Grzywinski and Pons managed to convince the project’s developers that they were up to the task. “We were almost too young to know how young we were,” Grzywinski says. It might have been a risky prospect for everyone involved, but they pulled it off, proving that expertise can, indeed, precede experience. Today, they’ve done more than 20 projects together, with four more new construction buildings in New York City, making them among the youngest to alter the Manhattan skyline. And actually, their youthfulness is awfully convenient when the project is a swank metropolitan hotel. Their latest commission is the brand-new Nolitan, a building located in another gritty-on-the-verge-of-trendy Manhattan neighborhood. Just opened this summer, the destination promises an infiltration of newer, hipper, and younger crowds to the area. And these two certainly look like they’d be right at home with that crowd, because, well, they are.

November 4, 2011: Find Local Style and True Grit at New York's Nolitan

The Globe and Mail

At first glance, you may suspect you've walked into the lobby of a super-cool design firm. A sunken lounge area features caramel leather banquettes beneath pristine shelves of Phaidon design books. A black and white couch by the reception area is so covetable my travel companion snapped its picture as if she had spotted a local celebrity. Owned by a development team with deep roots in the neighbourhood, the hotel was brought to life by local design practice Grzywinski+Pons, which endeavoured to mirror the independent, fashionable look of the area. The glass façade integrates the hotel into the surrounding neighbourhood, and the building is split into two connected sections, preventing it from appearing as one jarring monolith on the street. A rooftop patio boasts views to the north and south, but, more important, allows you to gaze down on the water-tower-spotted roofs where real New Yorkers catch their rays...The words industrial and warmth do not usually go hand in hand, but from the poured concrete ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass windows to the soft hardwood floors and red cashmere throws, each room manages to find the balance between modern and comfortable...This is how New York life should be: stylish, compact and right in the middle of the action. In the heart of one of the city's coolest neighbourhoods, with great views and disarmingly attentive service, the Nolitan offers the true Manhattan experience.

October 28, 2011: Stay Cool

Financial Times

The Nolitan is a tough chunk of concrete and glass, as robust as the industrial buildings that make up the area’s solid streets. Designed by young neighbourhood architects Grzywinski and Pons, the steel framework of the façades echoes the iron fire-escapes of the characteristic local vernacular while the corner melts into blocky industrial glass, giving the rooms the most archetypally New York views you can imagine. More open, more urban and less self-consciously boutiquey than some of the city’s new hotels, the lobby is built to appeal to a cool clientele. Very visible from the street, the sunken lobby is enveloped in concrete, timber and the best collection of book titles I’ve ever seen in a design hotel. The rooms are generous, bright, hard-wearing, some with balconies, all with gritty street views that allow you to lie in bed watching the city lead its life outside. The Nolitan is also just about the most convenient place I’ve stayed anywhere in the city...For decades now New York has suffered a lack of good new architecture...Now, you don’t need to go just to look at good new architecture, you can stay in it.

This freshly opened 55-room boutique hotel has recently sprung up in place of a parking lot in Nolita, Manhattan. Casa Vogue

July 28, 2011: A SoHo Hotel, but Not in SoHo

The New York Times

“WE WANTED TO SHOWCASE THE LIGHT AND THE VIEWS, BUT WE DIDN'T WANT TO CREATE A CRAZY, TRANSPARENT, VOYEURISTIC EXPERIENCE,” SAID MATTHEW GRZYWINSKI, OF GRZYWINSKI+PONS, THE FIRM THAT DID THE ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIORS. “AND WE WANTED THE ROOMS TO BE COMFORTABLE AND WELCOMING — WE DIDN'T WANT THE PURITY OF THE AESTHETIC TO INTERFERE WITH THAT.” SO THE ROOMS ARE OPEN, WITH LARGE SWATHS OF GLASS THAT ALTERNATE BETWEEN CLEAR AND FROSTED SECTIONS, AND SIMPLE FURNISHINGS: FREESTANDING TUBS, PLATFORM BEDS AND WOOD FLOORS TREATED TO LOOK UNFINISHED.
